Does mixing vinegar and baking soda make a better cleaner?

No. Vinegar is an acid and baking soda is a mild alkali, so mixing them mostly neutralizes both into salty water and carbon dioxide. The fizz is the reaction, not extra cleaning power. Soak limescale in plain white vinegar for about 30 minutes, and scrub grease with a thick baking soda and water paste.

How to do it

  1. Match the cleaner to the dirtUse vinegar, an acid, on mineral deposits like limescale. Use baking soda, a mild abrasive alkali, on grease and baked-on grime.
  2. Soak limescale in plain white vinegar for about 30 minutesUnscrew the aerator or showerhead and drop it into a glass of undiluted white vinegar. For fixed parts, wrap a vinegar-soaked cloth around them.
  3. Rinse and brush off the loosened scaleRinse with water and go over the mesh with an old toothbrush. If the buildup is heavy, repeat the soak or leave it longer.
  4. Scrub grease with a thick baking soda pasteMix roughly three parts baking soda to one part water until it holds its shape. Spread it on the greasy area and scrub with a damp sponge.
  5. Rinse between cleaners if you use bothIf one surface needs both, rinse thoroughly after the first cleaner so the two don't react and cancel out.

Questions that come up

Is the fizzing mix good for anything at all?

The bubbling can loosen some light debris, which is why it shows up in drain hacks. But by the time the fizz stops, most of the acid and the alkali are used up. For a real clog, a plunger or a drain snake usually does more than the reaction.

Can I use vinegar and baking soda one after the other?

Yes, as long as you rinse in between. For example, scrub with baking soda paste, rinse well, then wipe with vinegar to remove the white film baking soda can leave behind. Without that rinse, the leftovers react on the surface and mostly cancel each other out.

Where should I avoid using vinegar?

Keep vinegar off natural stone like marble, limestone and travertine, because the acid can etch and dull it. Also avoid waxed or oiled wood, seasoned cast iron and some sealed grout. On those surfaces, use a pH-neutral cleaner, or baking soda paste where light scrubbing is safe.

What if the limescale is still there after 30 minutes?

Thick or old buildup can need a longer soak, from a few hours to overnight. Warming the vinegar slightly speeds things up. Brush between soaks to remove what has loosened. On hard-water deposits that resist vinegar, a citric acid solution is a common next step.

Use vinegar or baking soda, not both. Limescale on the tap? Soak it in plain white vinegar. Greasy tray? Use a thick baking soda paste and scrub. Mixed, they mostly neutralize into salty water. That's why the fizzy soak leaves more scale.
