How do I export my ChatGPT chat history to keep a copy?
ChatGPT keeps your conversations only in the sidebar by default, so export a copy before you need it. Go to Settings, Data Controls, Export Data; ChatGPT emails a zip containing chat.html. Open that file and search any phrase to bring back an old thread. Archiving only hides chats and deleting removes them.
How to do it
- Open Settings and go to Data ControlsIn ChatGPT, open Settings and select the Data Controls section.
- Choose Export DataSelect Export Data. ChatGPT then emails you a zip file containing your conversations.
- Open chat.html from the zipUnzip the emailed archive and open the chat.html file it holds to view your saved conversations.
- Search a phrase to find an old threadInside chat.html, search for a phrase you remember and the old thread returns.
Questions that come up
Is archiving a chat the same as exporting it?
No. Archiving only hides a chat from your main list, and deleting removes it entirely. Neither creates a separate copy you control. Only an export gives you a standalone file that survives independently of what happens to the conversations inside ChatGPT.
Does the export capture chats I create after I run it?
No. An export is a snapshot of what exists at the moment you take it, not a live backup. Conversations you have afterward are not included. To keep them, run the export again later so the new zip reflects your more recent chats.
