How do I dictate AI prompts instead of typing them?

Use your keyboard's microphone or your assistant app's voice button to dictate the prompt instead of typing it. Tap the mic, say your request in plain language, and send it unedited. In a side-by-side test, typing took about forty seconds and speaking the same request took about thirteen, with both replies equally usable.

How to do it

  1. Open your AI assistant appUse any assistant that accepts text prompts. Most already support voice input by default, so you don't need to install anything new.
  2. Tap the microphone on the keyboardBring up the keyboard and tap the small microphone icon, or use the app's own voice button if it has one. The device starts listening.
  3. Speak your request in one breathSay what you want in plain, everyday language, the way you'd ask a person. There's no need for special phrasing or keywords.
  4. Send it without polishingDon't stop to fix small wording or minor recognition errors. Send the raw dictated prompt — the reply is usually just as usable as a typed one.
  5. Compare a typed and a spoken promptTry the same request both ways once and notice the time difference and which reply you preferred. This shows whether the habit is worth keeping.

Questions that come up

Does voice input work in every assistant app?

Most major assistant apps now ship voice input by default, either as a built-in mic button or through your keyboard's microphone. A few older or web-only interfaces don't, but on a modern phone you can almost always dictate into the text field, so it's worth checking before you type.

What if the voice recognition makes typos?

Minor errors rarely change the answer, because the assistant reads intent, not exact spelling. Send it unedited first and only fix wording if the reply misses. Names, code, or unusual technical terms are the main cases where a quick manual correction still helps.

Can I dictate long or detailed prompts?

Yes. Speaking is often faster than typing for longer requests, and you can pause and keep going. For very structured prompts with formatting, exact names, or code, dictate the bulk and then type the few precise fragments that recognition tends to get wrong.
